Rural Communities

We believe in local solutions to local problems. It’s both economical and energy-efficient to capture and treat water near the source. Piping and pumping water from centralised plants is both expensive and energy-consuming, and many communities struggle with inadequate pipes and aging treatment systems.

Algaewheel® offers odourless, decentralised facilities that don’t require big pipe infrastructure. They can either be used as stand-alone plants, or as a retrofit on existing older plants, in order to help them meet stringent modern water standards. Our system is low-maintenance, energy-efficient, and its simple operational controls ensure low staffing requirements.

Urban Communities

Demand for water is highest in urban areas; whether it be for drinking water, commercial businesses such as microbreweries, building heat & cooling systems, or in the irrigation of parks and green spaces. However, urban areas struggle with space, and adding new treatment facilities often requires re-engineering and retrofitting pipes, which can be expensive and disruptive to the local community.

Our decentralised facilities can provide an alternative solution. Algaewheel® plants have a small footprint, can be incorporated into new builds or integrated into the local landscape, and are both unobtrusive and odour-less. The Algaewheel® housing resembles an aesthetically pleasing greenhouse, and can treat and return high quality water directly into the local system.

AGING PIPE INFRASTRUCTURE

Big Pipe Infrastructure typically amounts to 2/3rds of the overall cost of water sanitation. Aging infrastructure that needs to be updated or replaced represents massive logistical and economic costs and takes a long time to install.

ALGAEWHEEL DOESN’T REQUIRE BIG PIPE INFRASTRUCTURE

Algaewheel’s® decentralized solution allows wastewater to be treated exactly where it’s produced, and the cleaned water to be resupplied directly back into the local community.

EXISTING PLANTS NO LONGER MEET CURRENT WATER STANDARDS

Older plants struggle to remove nitrates, phosphates, pharmaceuticals and heavy metals. Tightened environmental standards may not be met by older plants, and non-compliance can lead to fines. Building new conventional plants is also a huge capital expense.

Algaewheel® can be retrofitted to existing plants to achieve higher modern standards

Our technology can either be used as a stand-alone facility or as a retrofit. Plants, such as  algae, naturally utilise both nitrates and phosphates, and can absorb some heavy metals into their cell structure while reducing others. Algaewheel® facilities can meet stringent industrial, potable and agricultural water standards, as required at a reduced cost.

We recognise that municipalities need to be particularly sensitive to high operating costs as these come out of their local budget. These will include:

  • Ongoing and increasing energy bills  which can account for some 40% of a water treatment plant’s overall costs.
  • Sludge removal, including transport to landfill or further processing including by energy-demanding incineration. 
  • Chemicals – typically 5-15% of the overall cost.
  • Difficulty of recruiting suitably qualified staff into a socially challenging environment and the costs of employing them.
OUR SOLUTION

The Algaewheel® process has several benefits over conventional models:

  • Algaewheel® facilities need ~90% less electricity than conventional plants, substantially reducing operational cost. 
  • With the addition of small solar panels they can even be operated independently of unreliable grid systems. 
  • Algaewheel® systems produce 25% less sludge than equivalent conventional systems. This reduces landfill or incineration costs, saving on transport, gate fees and power.
  • Algaewheel® plants do not use chemicals to help clean water completely negating this cost.
  • Algaewheel® facilities have been designed to simplify operations and therefore need fewer technically skilled staff. 
  • Being odor-free and often covered they are a much more attractive environment in which to work. 
  • Algaewheel’s® controlled manufacturing process has been designed to reduce maintenance costs.
